Sickle cell disease, also known as sickle cell anemia, is a disease of genetic origin and one of the most common and severe hemoglobinopathies in the world. In Portugal, information corresponding to a 2011 study indicates that, at that time, there were about 590 patients with sickle cell disease. Today it is thought that such number is much higher and continues to grow. The literature on this disease is mostly dedicated to the clinical aspects, and there are no known national studies in the area of social sciences focused on the experience of patients with sickle cell disease and/or on the different impacts of the disease in their lives. This dissertation aims to be a first contribution to fill this gap.The present work develops an exploratory study that starts from the following questions: What impact does the experience of sickle cell disease has on patient’s lives? How do they deal with the disease and what means of care(s) do they mobilize? With these questions in mind, the main objective is to understand the different life experiences of patients with sickle cell disease and the aspects of care that involve it. It is intended to analyze: a) the reception and reaction to the diagnosis; b) the impacts of the disease; c) the difficulties and needs felt throughout the life cycle and d) the forms of care. This research used a qualitative methodology, which privileged the individuals' narratives as a way to access their subjectivity. Thus, twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients, caregivers and health professionals, recognizing the importance of their voices for the understanding of the experience and the living of the disease and care.eng
