Purpose: The main objective of this investigation is to evaluate the impact of Brand Personality on Consumer Brand Engagement, focusing on the cognitive and emotional components. This work also intends to evaluate the relationship established between the Brand Personality and the Self-Brand Connection and the consumer’s Brand Usage Intention. On the other hand, it is intended to verify whether the cognitive and emotional components of Consumer Brand Engagement drive to Self-brand Connection and to the consumer's Brand Usage Intention.Methodology/approach: To achieve the previously proposed objectives, a conceptual model was designed with nine research hypotheses. An online questionnaire resulted in 210 valid answers. The data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS and AMOS 25 software, based on the Structural Equation Model.Findings: The results of this study prove the direct and positive impact of Brand Personality on Cognitive Brand Engagement and Emotional Brand Engagement, as well as on Self-brand Connection. However, the findings do not show sufficient statistical significance to confirm that the consumer's Brand Usage Intention is a consequence of the Brand Personality, Cognitive Brand Engagement and Emotional Brand Engagement. The impact of Cognitive Brand Engagement in Self-brand Connection did not result as being statistically relevant.Research limitations/implications: This dissertation had a relatively small sample, with only 210 respondents. So, these findings should be interpreted with caution, as it may not be a faithful representation of the population reality. Also, the sample only applies to Portugal, so this study may have different results if applied to other countries or cultures. This investigation left open the reference to the brand that respondents considered in the questionnaire’s responses. However, given that some brands have the potential to establish stronger relationships with the consumer than others, it is important to consider that each brand motivates, through their personality, a different level of engagement.Practical implications: On a practical level, this research provides, to marketers and managers, a better understanding of the importance of working on the personality of their brands, in order to take advantage of the positive effects generated on the consumer, through their engagement and Self-brand Connection. The findings also offer a set of useful guidelines for designing and managing the brand strategy of companies and organizations, towards a more fruitful relationships with consumers.Originality/Value: The present work empirically confirms that the Brand Personality contributes to the development of the cognitive and emotional components of the Consumer Brand Engagement, as well as to the consumer's Self-brand Connection, a relationship that does not appear to have been studied before. The confirmation that Self-brand Connection leads to the consumer's Brand Usage Intention also contributes to an update of the literature through the pioneering study of the direct relationship between these two concepts.
