Innovation has proved to be an argument of differentiation at the business level, being associated with success and the latest technological novelty. However, it is also associated with investment. Although innovation is theoretically easy to implement, on the other hand its practical implementation becomes more complex and difficult to quantify. The literature itself is inconsistent in relation to the impacts of innovation on the performance of companies. The objective of this work was to analyze the relationship of innovation in the finances of Portuguese companies. To this end, a database extracted from the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) was used. The sample consisted of 24,679 active companies operating in Portugal in the manufacturing industry between 2008 and 2016. For estimation, a "recursive bivariate probit model" (RBPM) was used. When analyzing the relationship between Innovation and Financial Constraints, the results reveal a negative relationship between the variables, confirming that companies with financial difficulties are more limited and less available to innovation. It was also observed a positive relationship between Innovation and Dimension, which indicates that larger companies are the ones that are better able to innovate. In conclusion, there was a positive relationship between the variables Innovation and Sales & Exports, arguing that Innovation will positively affect the results and finances of companies. In the end, a small suggestion is left for future investigations related to the subject.
