The present report is presented as part of the internship of the masters degree in ‘Educação Social, Desenvolvimento e Dinâmicas Locais (MESDDL)’ Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra (FPCEUC), taking place at the Prisão de Leiria de Jovens (EPL-J).This report is splitted in two main parts. The first part is related to the theorical grounding and the second part refers to the presentation of the investigation developed throughout the internship, including the institutional description, methodological options and its results. This investigation had, as a target, parents (male parents) who were inmates on the prison where the internship took place. The internship happened throughout the whole academic year, although I was only allowed to be physically present for four months, which justifies the fact that this internship has been developed around an investigation. The techniques applied in data gathering were direct observation, the interview and the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire. This internship, alongside with the investigation, has the purpose of contributing to the children’s rights, focusing on inmates children, to not just have abstract concepts, but legal and real rights with physical implications, and to spread awareness to the conditions that children are given when visiting their parents, as well as matters of direct support in regards to positive parenting through educational interventions with parent inmates. The general objective of this curricular internship was to develop a research that would allow us to understand the perception of male fathers in a situation of reclusion about parenting. The urgency to address the ways in which parents are tried in Europe's criminal justice system stems from concerns for the fundamental well-being of their children. As it turns out, psychologists, social workers, researchers and other professionals agree that the arrest of a parent can have adverse, life-threatening consequences for children when they are not supported, and that reasonable steps should be taken to help mitigate the consequences. damages of separation between parents and children. Given this context, the conviction of one of the parents is a uniquely crucial moment in the criminal justice process, for intervening in the future of the child, of a father/mother in conflict with the law. Having a parent in prison can have a significant impact on children's lives. From the moment of the parents' arrest, and throughout the sentence and execution of the sentence, children are affected. An estimated 800,000 children in the EU are separated from an incarcerated parent each year. Some may perceive separation as abandonment by the father; others may experience anxiety and loss of self-esteem. From a mental health perspective, it is crucial to support the development and maintenance of normal parent-child relationships. Having contact and being responsible for a child can have a strong positive influence on an offender's life while in prison and even more so after release. It has been found through the literature that more and more children face family breakdown due to parental imprisonment and that prison reduces adult men's income, compromises their health, reduces family resources and contributes to family disintegration. It has also been observed that parental imprisonment can increase children's deficits, thus ensuring that the effects of imprisonment on inequality are transferred across generations.
