Biography
DULCE FREIRE (Ph.D.) is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics/University of Coimbra (Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra) and the Principal Investigator of ReSEED_ Rescuing seeds' heritage: engaging in a new framework of agriculture and innovation since the 18th century, a transdiciplinary project funded by the European Research Council (StG GA760090), taking place at University of Coimbra (2018-2023). She has a degree in History (1992) from NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa), where also concluded the master (1998), with a dissertation about wine production and consumption, and the PhD (2008), studying the impacts of the "green revolution" in Portugal. Joining the Institute of Social Sciences/University of Lisbon (Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa) in 2008, she developed there research, teaching, university management and outreach activities until the end of 2019. In particular, she has been committed since the beginning, in 2015, to the creation of the College F3-Food, Farming and Forestry, which is a transdisciplinary platform for research and teaching, supported by the rectory of the University of Lisbon. She also contributed to the creation of the new PhD program in Sustainability Sciences offered by Colégio F3. During these years, she supervised more than 30 masters and Phd students, postdocs, research fellows and visiting researchers. She has been part of the organization committees of dozens of scientific meetings and networks, both national and international. In particular, since 2008 she has been co-chair (with Anton Schuurman or Tim Soens) of the Rural History Network that is part of the European Social Science History Conference, organized by the International Institute of Social Sciences (Amesterdam). Her publications consist of more than 100 articles or book chapters, and five books. Among those, is the collective book (co-edited with Pedro Lains) An Agrarian História of Portugal 1000-2000. Economic Development on the European Frontier (Leiden/Brill 2017), that is the first synthesis ever of the history of Portuguese agriculture in the long term. She is the vice president of the Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History /Associação Portuguesa de História Económica e Social (since 2017), a member of the board of the Portuguese Society of Rural Studies/Sociedade Portuguesa de Estudos Rurais (since 2012), coordinator of RuralReport_ Rural History Network in Portuguese/Rede de História Rural em Português. Since 2013 she has been the representative of Portugal in the European Rural History Organisation. Researching rural and agrarian history within Portuguese and Iberian contexts since the ’90s. in recent years she coordinated various scientific projects related to changes in agriculture, food, society and public policy during the 19th and 20th centuries, bringing together researchers and students with different backgrounds, such as History, Anthropology, Sociology, Geography and Architecture. As Principal Investigator of the ReSEED project, it has been possible to take the challenge of consolidating transdisciplinary research even further. While developing an in-depth historical investigation of crops on the Iberian Peninsula since the 16th century, she seeks inputs from sciences like biology, agronomy, chemistry or archelogy, aiming to build robust scientific knowledge about the past.
