Abstract
The Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (Ce3C), formerly the Centre of Environmental Biology (CBA—http://cba.fc.ul.pt), is a large R&D unit based at the Science Faculty of Lisbon University (FCUL). Founded in 1994, the Centre has evolved its vision and strategy in recent years, expanding its research to address science and societal challenges in ecology, evolution and the environment (the three “E”s in the Centre’s name), enlarging its geographic scope to encompass tropical and insular ecosystems, and embracing new innovative methodologies and collaborative approaches. With these changes and the integration of two further research groups (Azores Biodiversity Group — http://www.gba.uac.pt/, and CCIAM — http://www.sim.ul.pt/cciam/), the Ce3C now includes 12 research groups nested into four Thematic Lines, all involving internationally recognised investigators. It conducts scientific activity in the domain of natural and environmental sciences, combining fundamental and theoretical research with applied research and services. Ce3C’s vision is to broaden knowledge of life and environmental sciences so as to meet the challenges of global change and help society build a sustainable future. Ce3C’s mission is interdisciplinary, combining research with action and integrating science and education to generate knowledge, train the next generation of scientists and contribute to a better-informed public.
