Abstract
CIIMAR’s vision is to contribute to the knowledge of the Ocean and coastal areas as a basis for the sustainable management and exploitation of resources. Our research is focused into three Thematic Lines: GLOBAL CHANGES AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, AQUACULTURE AND SEAFOOD QUALITY, and MARINE BIOTECHNOLOGY. These is pursued by 10 Research Groups with a substantial degree of interaction to promote a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to the various aspects of ocean and coastal research, seen as a whole system where physical, biological, physiological and chemical processes take place and interact. Therefore, CIIMAR aims at unravelling the links between those processes, contributing to the comprehension of the Ocean and its ecosystems functioning, as well as ecosystem responses to the ongoing global changes. In this context, we contribute for the development of sustainable aquaculture practices to meet human demand, as well as for the assurance of a proper quality control of seafood products. We address the biodiversity of marine organisms as an unexplored pool of biomolecules to provide innovative solutions for the increasing demand for food, new drugs and industrial products. Specific objectives: 1) Discovering novel marine natural products with bioactivity produced by aquatic organisms with biotechnological application in multiple areas including environmental (bioremediation), human and animal health (drugs, cosmetics, nutraceutics), and industrial (food and feed; paints and coatings); 2) Maximizing the growth potential of current and alternative species for aquaculture; improve disease resistance and animal welfare; develop sustainable aquaculture systems and reduce environmental impacts; provide high quality seafood for human consumption; 3) Developing an integrated, multi-disciplinary understanding of the structure and dynamics of marine ecosystems, and their response to changes at local, regional and global scales; quantify relationships between the human society and the ecosystem services; 4) Bridging the gap between research, innovation, technology transfer and societal needs.
