Abstract
We continue to propose to look upon the Earth as an integrated complex system interconnecting the information on what affects us - the Earth's surface -, either having a inner and/or outer origin. On top of the specific fundamental and/or applied research projects of each group, we are implementing three transversal themes, combining the two groups Earth Dynamics and Solar System Sciences: 1. Space Weather On this transversal theme we will continue to focuses on the solar activity which by interacting with the Earth affects the performance of technological systems - with an impact on economic activities and the life of populations. In our strategic view the ultimate mission of SPINLab is to play a role in societal and economic decision making. This strategy has been pursued since the unit's restructuring. We have established partnerships with prestigious national corporations (e.g. NAV Portugal) who are sensitive to the influence of these phenomena in their activities and aware of the current lack of an efficient space weather forecasting and mitigation service in Portugal. Our vision of what SPINLab should be lead us to establish partnerships with regional and local companies, so that our scientific knowledge may be output in the form of products that are understandable by non-experts. So, SPINLab is the groundwork for the most important contribution of our project to society. 2. Natural and Anthropic Hazards and Risks: Concerning this transversal theme, the main goal is to continue to analyse, evaluate and minimized the effects on the Earth surface and atmosphere of the geological processes (seismic and volcanic events, floods, landslides, mobility in alluvial aquifers, and soil vulnerabilities), natural radioactivity and anthropic activity (soil, water and atmospheric contamination, light pollution). Our focus will be to assess the susceptibility, hazard and vulnerability to which populations and their goods are exposed.
