Os Cafés como espaços de sociabilidade - O caso da Baixa de Coimbra

Abstract

The second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century generated in Portugal, and in the rest of Europe, enormous changes in social, political and financial terms. The 1st World War brought about a deep crisis and, consequently, a decrease in the living conditions of the population. The 1920's brought a great desire to innovate, modernize and, above all, a feeling of freedom that materialized with the importation from Europe of spaces for fun and sociability, such as cafés. These spaces became part of the population's daily life, becoming important parts in defining cities and those who lived there. They enabled social and cultural environments which were forever marked in history by their material and immaterial value and by the memories they created and which were left through pieces of art, specifically designed for each space by local artists. In Coimbra, the object of study of this work, this movement was equally felt, being possible to locate its own set of cafés with a history spread throughout various parts of the city. Although many of them have been forgotten for different reasons, it is necessary to remember the importance that these cafés had for society and to value and preserve the history and location of those that still exist.

A segunda metade do século XIX e o início do século XX geraram em Portugal, e no resto da Europa, enormes alterações a nível social, político e financeiro. A I Guerra Mundial originou uma profunda crise e, consequentemente, uma diminuição das condições de vida da população. A década de 20 trouxe uma grande vontade de inovar, de modernizar e, acima de tudo, um sentimento de liberdade que se veio a concretizar com a importação de espaços de diversão e de sociabilidade, como os cafés, na Europa. Estes espaços passaram a integrar o quotidiano da população tornando-se partes importantes na definição das cidades e de quem as vive. Possibilitaram ambiências sociais e culturais que ficaram marcadas para sempre na história pelo seu valor material e imaterial e pelas memórias que criaram e que foram deixadas através de peças de artes especificamente desenhadas para cada espaço por artistas locais. Em Coimbra, objeto de estudo deste trabalho, esse movimento foi igualmente sentido, sendo possível localizar o seu próprio conjunto de cafés com história espalhados por vários núcleos da cidade. Apesar de muitos deles terem caído no esquecimento, é necessário relembrar a importância que estes cafés tiveram para a sociedade e valorizar e preservar a história e o local dos que ainda existem.
