Práticas funerárias num enquadramento sociocultural das comunidades na transição entre o II e o I milénio a.C. A singularidade da “linha do Tejo”

Abstract

Num contexto de graduais mudanças, de novidades que se alastram e de comunidades que se alteram (demograficamente, socialmente e economicamente), as práticas funerárias cobrem-se de significado cultural e caracterizam profundamente as suas pessoas, deixando refletir também esses novos paradigmas que vão sendo adotados. No entanto, nem sempre o que vem de “fora” altera os ideais dos indígenas e, em certos espaços, a Morte terá resistido às alterações dos seus rituais. A partir de alguns estudos feitos até à data e considerando diversas interpretações, foi proposta, neste trabalho, uma análise e reflexão desta mesma complexidade do tema, visando o lançamento de certas interrogações e hipóteses que, desejavelmente, possam no futuro reformular novas respostas e conclusões. A invisibilidade e por vezes imaterialidade dos rituais que antecedem o ato de depositar um corpo, seja de que forma for, será sempre o principal obstáculo nesta demanda. No seguimento da dissertação, o principal foco foi dado à “linha do Tejo” que, pelas suas características geográficas, hidrográficas e culturais, se destaca no panorama geral do território português e merece, por isso, uma particular análise. Aqui é possível encontrar contextos funerários de elevado interesse que permitem esboçar uma (das) face da Morte, mas também da Vida, refletindo as dinâmicas sociais, económicas e culturais das comunidades (e particularmente dos seus indivíduos) que habitavam este espaço. Complexidade, regionalismos, heterogeneidade e excecionalidade são algumas das características que, de um modo geral, pautam os contextos da Morte no passado mais recuado, principalmente ao que ao final do II milénio a.C. diz respeito. Numa fase final, pretendeu-se reunir um conjunto de sugestões e “ferramentas” que possam contribuir para um novo “ponto de partida” na formulação desta extensa e profunda problemática.

Set in a context of gradual changes, of novelties that spread and communities that mutate (demographically, socially and economically), the funerary practices are covered with cultural significance and deeply characterize their people, also revealing these new paradigms that are being adopted. However, what comes from "outside" does not always change the ideals of the indigenous, and in certain territories, Death will have resisted the alterations of its rituals. Based on some studies carried out to the present day and considering different interpretations, this paper proposes an analysis and reflection on this very complex theme, with the aim of launching certain questions and hypotheses that, hopefully, may reformulate new answers and conclusions in the future. The invisibility and sometimes immateriality of the rituals that precede the last act of depositing a body will always be the main obstacle in this quest. Following the dissertation, the main focus was given to the "Tagus line" which, due to its geographical, hydrographic and cultural characteristics, stands out in the general panorama of the Portuguese territory and therefore deserves a particular analysis. Here it is possible to find funerary contexts of great interest that allow us to sketch one (of the) faces of Death, but also of Life, reflecting the social, economic and cultural dynamics of the communities (and their individuals) that inhabited this space. Complexity, regionalism, heterogeneity and exceptionality are some of the characteristics that, in general, characterize the contexts of Death in the more remote past, especially at the end of the II millennium BC. In a final chapter, we intended to gather a set of suggestions and "tools" that may contribute to a new "starting point" in the formulation of this extensive and profound problematic.
