The term "dental anthropology" first appears in the title of an article published in 1900 by George Buschan. However, it is not until 1944 that it is introduced more formally by Klatsky and Fischer. Metric and non-metric discrete dental characters begin to emerge and be revered in research on biological relationships between populations from the 19th century onwards. The importance of variation in identified non-metric discrete dental characters, by degrees, emerges systematically with the ASUDAS method. The present work aimed to study the non-metrical discrete dental characters of a sample from the Hypogeum of Monte Canelas I, from the Alcalar region, south Portugal, housed in the Prehistory Laboratory of the Life Sciences Department, dated to the Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic. It was also intended to compare the following sample with other Portuguese samples and from other geographical origins. To this end, the ASUDAS system was used, to which two characters were added, one suggested by Weets (2009), subsequently studied by Marado and Silva (2016), and the other studied by Silva and collaborators (2012), to characterise dental morphology. The results of the analysis of the non-metric discrete dental characters showed the vicinity of the sample when compared with other Portuguese samples, namely Bolores, Cova da Moura and Pai Mogo I. However, this was not the case for other samples, as from the Canary Islands, Capsiano, Kabyle, Shawia, Greece, Italy, and Turkey.Future investigations are needed for a more detailed resolution and to enrich the knowledge of dental morphology in Portugal.
