For designers and artists, one of the most challenging tasks is to keep discovering how they can use the same techniques and components to different uses. A possible solution is to use modular systems as a tool to produce more complex results by looking at those familiar components but from new angles. With the introduction of new programming languages and the rise of the new media, the problem posed is how to design a modular program capable of interpreting varied inputs and adapting them to new formats. By researching the state of the art on image synthesis and the use of modules on computational systems, we understood a variable grid and varying shapes could depict any visual information. Therefore, to answer the problem, we propose a website that accepts images, videos or live capture and transforms its cells into variable monochromatic tiles that represent a tone of grey. When seen from a distance, these compositions of tiles return optical illusions in which the user can recognise the input image, therefore resulting in variable mosaics. By varying the cell grid, the combination of tiles and their parameters, the user gets a wide pool of patterns to choose from. Additionally, several functionalities are implemented in order to achieve a more flexible tool, such as a function to add text that has the same visual language as the images and a function to draw that provides a way to fully control the value represented by each tile in the grid. By having a system like this the visual parameters can be easily manipulated to represent images, text, drawings or just abstract patterns. This approach seeks for a platform with a level of flexibility that allows the generation of a wide variety of visual artefacts. Therefore, its results can be used in different areas of Design, for example for visual identities, and also New Media Art, for the creation of mirror installations.
