This thesis contributes to the study of the relationship between foreign policy and identity by highlighting the complex interplay between foreign and domestic politics in the construction of the state's identity. It also contributes to our understanding of the political and social transformation that Turkey, an important country in international relations due to its location and connections to Europe, Russia and the Middle East, underwent in the beginning of the twenty-first century. Turkey's political system is today under the rule of the AKP party and its former leader, now President of the Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The AKP and Erdoğan have won consecutive elections. In the process, they have put an end to the influence of the secular and Kemalist elite over the political and military institutions of the country, which had defined Turkey's political life for decades. This thesis investigates this transformation by shedding light on one of the processes through which it occurred. It argues that the AKP government used Turkey's foreign policy to redefine Turkish national identity by incorporating a new concept of identity articulated by Islamic social conservatives. It also argues that this process was not reflected in the party's domestic politics, where, as the cases analysed in this dissertation show, concessions to Kemalist ideology were made. It focuses its analysis on the period of the first mandate of the AKP government, between 2002 and 2007, since it is in this period that the confrontation between the Kemalist elite and the challenge to it represented by the rise of the AKP was most evident.pt
