Abstract: A tradição têxtil é ancestral.
The textile tradition is very old. Mastering science and technology favored inventions, innovations, and progresses, a dynamic process which gained remarkable projection with the Industrial Revolution. The birth of «industrial civilization» caused irreversible changes and disruptions in several areas, being an ignition key to economic and social development. In Portugal, the industrialization process operated successfully in the textile and clothing industry (TCI). Despite being today an important export sector of the national economy faces some critical challenges: image deficit, idiosyncratic business mindset, shortage of skilled labor and low Research and Development (R&D) transfer rates. Regularities such as technological backwardness, illiteracy, small national market or capital insufficiency cross a vast historical period observed in this research. The replacement of the hand loom by mechanical equipment represents the first technological leap for the textile sector. In the first years of the 20th century the introduction of electricity as the main energy source had a significant and transformative impact, either over production or at social organization in factory context. Industrial chemistry also influenced working methods in textile completion. These technological changes were supported in foreign technicians and engineers, inasmuch as these specialists had an important role in training the factory workers, to whom they transferred knowledge and mastery of different techniques. The development of the textile industry (in Guimarães) was conditioned by an inoperative education system and the absence of higher education institutions connected with the industry. However, the opening of the University of Minho (1973), associated with its internationally recognized research units, contributed to change the scenario. This change was accentuated by successive crises that affected and forced the textile industry into a rupture with the old management model. These aspects decisively influenced the consolidation of an industrial (textile) centrality in the region of Guimarães. Industrialization was sustained over a local and articulated plan, involving industrialists, elites and population, subordinating itself to a strategy established in the late decades of the 19th century, lasting in its effects, until the 21st century. The identification of discontinuities converges with a new technological leap. The textile sector is resilient, more focused on technology and innovation, more oriented towards demanding, competitive markets and available to embrace the challenges of digitalization, imposed by Industry 4.0. This project intends to identify and analyze the potential and constraints of TCI between 1850 and 2016 in Guimarães and determine the science and technology contributions for the growth of the sector, even when threatened by its weaknesses.
