(Inter)Relações entre migração, redes sociais pessoais e tecnologias de informação e comunicação: Um estudo com migrantes venezuelanos em Portugal

Abstract

A migração é um fenómeno complexo, cujo impacto pode perturbar as redes sociais pessoais dos indivíduos e afetar negativamente a sua saúde mental. Atendendo ao contexto pré e pós migratório, a presente investigação tem como principal objetivo contribuir para a compreensão (1) das transformações nas redes sociais pessoais, (2) do tipo e frequência de utilização das TIC’s e, por fim (3) das inter-relações entre as redes e a utilização das TIC’s. Neste sentido, o protocolo de investigação, que incluiu o Mapa de Rede Social Pessoal (Sluzki, 1996), um Questionário sobre a Experiência de Migração e um Questionário sobre a Utilização das TIC’s na Migração, foi aplicado a uma amostra de 21 migrantes venezuelanos a residir em Portugal há mais de um ano e menos de três anos, com idades superiores a 18 anos. Os resultados da comparação dos mapas de rede pré e pós migração revelaram no pós migração (1) um aumento do tamanho das redes dos migrantes, (2) um aumento no número de elementos no quadrante da família e (3) uma diminuição no quadrante da comunidade. Foi ainda possível verificar que após a migração há um aumento significativo do uso de sites de redes sociais, e um ligeiro aumento de chamadas de vídeo e chat para comunicar com a rede. Os resultados mostraram ainda uma correlação negativa entre o número de elementos no quadrante da comunidade com a utilização de SMS, e uma correlação positiva entre a frequência diária de contactos e a perceção de utilidade das TIC’s. Os resultados obtidos são discutidos procurando promover a compreensão das interconexões entre as redes sociais pessoais e a utilização das TIC’s no contexto de migração. As limitações identificadas no presente estudo são também apresentadas, sugerindo-se a partir destas, linhas de investigação futuras.

Migration is a complex phenomenon whose impact can disrupt individuals' personal social networks and negatively affect their mental health. Given the pre- and post-migration context, the main objective of this research is to contribute to the understanding of (1) the transformations in personal social networks, (2) the type and frequency of use of ICTs and, finally, (3) the inter-relationships between networks and the use of ICTs. In this sense, the research protocol, which included the Personal Social Network Map (Sluzki, 1996), a Questionnaire on Migration Experience and a Questionnaire on the Use of ICTs in Migration, was applied to a sample of 21 Venezuelan migrants living in Portugal for more than one year and less than three years, aged over 18 years. The results of the comparison of the pre- and post-migration network maps revealed in the post-migration (1) an increase in the size of migrants' networks, (2) an increase in the number of members in the family quadrant and (3) a decrease in the community quadrant. There was also a significant increase in the use of social networking sites, and a slight increase in video calls and chat to communicate with the network after the migration. The results also showed a negative correlation between the number of elements in the community quadrant and the use of SMS, and a positive correlation between the daily frequency of contacts and the perception of usefulness of ICTs. The results obtained are discussed in order to promote the understanding of the interconnections between personal social networks and the use of ICTs in the context of migration. The limitations identified in this study are also presented and future research lines are suggested based on these.
