dc.description.abstract | This dissertation of empiric nature concerns itself with the origins of our attitudes towards immigration and immigrant workers, examining two different cases, Portugal, and Germany. This field of study has been heavily debated throughout the last years, given the increase of immigration rates in Europe associated with new social, economic, and cultural shifts. This reality has therefor contributed to the rising complexion and importance of the majorities perception of immigration (Fitzgerald & Awar, 2018). The analyzed factors were social distance, human values, and nationalism, which were analyzed through several descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations and linear regressions. The results of this study revealed that all of the analyzed factors were distinctly related to attitudes towards immigration. Moreover, the results also revealed similar and complementary rising result patterns between Portugal and Germany. Furthermore, the comparisons between all the final results of the linear regressions showed that openness to change, self-transcendence, and self-valorization are positively related with negative attitudes towards immigrant workers and immigration. However, human values of conservation showed positive relations with positive attitudes towards immigration. Moreover, social distance was the factor that contributed the most to the explanation of negative attitudes towards immigrants, meanwhile nationalism barely appeared as one of the explanations, only suggesting negative impact in two items of the Portuguese sample. | eng |
