In the current context, and with the COVID-19 pandemic, the air conditioning and ventilation of buildings is again discussed in detail. Whether in the context of work, rest or leisure, people spend much of their time inside the buildings. For reasons of comfort, safety, health or quality of life, the renovation of buildings is inevitable and constitutes a unique opportunity to re-think, redesign and modernise buildings. The buildings sector is responsible for a large amount of energy consumption and, in warm cases, greenhouse gas emissions. In view of this and the growing global concern about climate change and resource scarcity, energy efficiency policies and measures have been implemented that have considerably increase the minimum thickness of the insulation layer applied to buildings. As these requirements tend to be increasingly demanding, it has become necessary to explore the use of highly efficient materials.Vacuum insulation panels (VIP), due to their low conductivity, emerge as a strong alternative to conventional materials, thus allowing the use of a smaller insulation thickness. The possibility of applying smaller thicknesses translates into a benefit in the useful volume available in indoor environments. This work will focus on the characterization of insulation solutions using VIPs in the roof of buildings, monitoring of its performance, under the influence of different climates and in different applications, and for this purpose are considered 2 cases of study. In the case of study 1, the VIPs were installed on the exterior roof of a building in Warsaw (Poland) and allow comparison between different dimensions of panels. In the case of study 2, located in Coimbra (Portugal), the rehabilitation was done by the interior and allows the comparison between a conventional solution of mineral wool and the solution integrating the VIPs. This work will contribute to the development of highly efficient constructive solutions with lower insulation thickness.
