Considering that age is a key parameter in human identification, several methods were developed in the area of Forensic Anthropology with the purpose of estimating the age-at-death based on various elements of the skeleton. Being among the most resistant and lasting traces of an individual's existence after death, teeth are excellent objects of study. One of the potential indicators of dental age in adults is occlusal wear, a natural and lifelong progressive process. Thus, using the Brothwell diagram (1981), occlusal wear in permanent upper and lower molars was used to estimate the age-at-death of a sample of adult individuals from the Identified Skeletal Collections from the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century and the Identified Skeletal Collections of the 21st Century of the University of Coimbra. The goals of the present study were, in sum, to evaluate the reliability and replicability of this methodology for age estimation in the context of Portuguese forensics, to document the extent of tooth wear, its frequency, severity and distribution, and also to analyze the evolution of such wear over time. The sample analyzed was comprised of 174 individuals, of both sexes (104 men and 70 women), aged between 17 and 96 years of age. A total of 1,161 molars were examined. The dentitions were observed through a careful visual inspection. A reduced intra- and inter-observer error was recorded, presenting kappa coefficients above 0.8 and error percentages below 10%. In general, the individuals were characterized by slight occlusal wear, exhibiting with great frequency grade 2 of the (adapted) Brothwell ordinal scale (1981). Tooth wear was more pronounced in males, with significant differences in the case of individuals from the 19th/20th century, but not for those of the 21st century. With age, it was mostly the variability degree of the recorded wear that increased. Among the molars it was not possible to observe a clear wear gradient, probably due to the relatively low wear rate. Between the 19th/20th and 21st century collections, significant differences were found, with the most recent presenting the greatest wear. When comparing the age estimated to the real age-at-death, relatively low percentages of correct estimates were obtained, namely 39,2% and 3,8% for the collections of the 19th/20th and 21st centuries, respectively. Finally, the correlation between age and wear was poor, particularly in the lower dentition. In conclusion, based on the obtained results, one can infer that Brothwell's tooth wear registration method (1981) for age estimation is not effective or reliable, and, as such, its use in the context of Portuguese forensics is unadvised.
