The world is currently facing an environmental crisis. One of the world’s most urgent objectives to face is decarbonization. One of the solutions to solve this problem is the replacement of internal combustion vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), thereby reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere during their use. A considerable investment in EVs and their research, both by companies and universities, and also by governments, has taken place in recent years. More and more EVs are being manufactured and are circulating on the roads all over the world. Consequently, the number of battery charging stations is also increasing. However, the charging system of the EV batteries has some repercussions on the electric power system, namely the reduction of the power factor and the generation of harmonics. This dissertation aims to control the power factor in EV charging systems and the reduction of harmonic distortion originated by the rectifiers. Based on the research performed and the simulation of various types of rectifiers, the consequences of charging these batteries are analyzed, as well as the various existing solutions. The following chapters analyze the various types of rectifiers and control and modulation methods to implement a system with reduced harmonic pollution, and that controls the active and reactive powers, according to the needs of the electrical network and the battery itself. An algorithm based on predictive control was developed to control the input current and the output voltage of the system.
