Learning from Tomorrow. Ensinamentos do Cinema para a Arquitetura

Abstract

The present dissertation is motivated by a search for principles to integrate in the professional practice of architecture, having cinema as a starting point, an art with the capacity to present living visions of conceptions of the future, on which these considerations fall.Architecture has always a temporal component in mind; it can be inspired, relate to and learn from the past and the present, but the product of its exercise will always be destined for the future. Recognizing that we are currently experiencing a time of wide-ranging concerns about environmental, social and political issues, these are having an interdisciplinary impact that also covers architecture. The same questions are at the basis of the conceptions of the future by cinema, which in this work are sought as foundations of thought to be brought back to the discipline of architecture.It is proposed to recognize notions and real problems of the present, through the analysis of their extrapolation by cinema, a medium in which this broad representation is possible in a unique way, demonstrating at the same time that these conceptions are not the product of abstract inspirations, but of well-founded basis. In this way, we reflect on the concepts behind these visions of the future, whose repetition in several works demonstrates its strength and represents the presence of these concerns in the minds of society.This work intends to highlight the role that these concerns can play in the practice of architecture and in its permanent critical reflection. Thus, it is proposed that the learning, creativity and awareness of architectural practice will be more complete when the temporal component of the future is added to them, seeking a greater awareness of the problems that affect not only today, but also tomorrow. The objective is summarized in the research question:Starting from creative cinematographic conceptions that envision the future, what themes and issues of its basis affect architecture? How should architecture be rethought considering these issues?

A presente dissertação é motivada por uma busca por princípios a integrar na prática profissional de arquitetura, tendo como ponto de partida o cinema, uma arte com a capacidade de apresentar visões vivas de conceções de futuro, sobre as quais recaem estas reflexões. A arquitetura tem sempre presente uma componente temporal; pode inspirar-se, relacionar-se e aprender com o passado e o presente, mas o produto do seu exercício destinar-se-á sempre ao futuro. Reconhecendo que atualmente atravessamos um momento de amplas preocupações que recaem sobre questões ambientais, sociais e políticas, estas vão tendo um impacto interdisciplinar que abrange igualmente a arquitetura. As mesmas questões estão nas bases das conceções do futuro pelo cinema, que neste trabalho se procuram como fundamento para uma aprendizagem de volta ao campo da arquitetura.Propõe-se reconhecer noções e problemas reais do presente, através da análise da sua extrapolação pelo cinema, meio pelo qual essa representação ampla é possível de forma única, demonstrando ao mesmo tempo que essas conceções não são produto de inspirações abstratas, mas de bases fundamentadas. Desta forma, reflete-se sobre os conceitos por detrás destas visões de futuro, cuja repetição em várias obras demonstra a sua força e representa a presença destas preocupações nas mentes da sociedade. Este trabalho pretende evidenciar o papel que essas preocupações podem ter na prática de arquitetura e na sua permanente reflexão crítica. Assim, propõe-se que a aprendizagem, criatividade e consciencialização da prática arquitetónica estarão mais completas ao ser-lhes acrescentada a componente temporal do futuro, procurando uma maior consciência dos problemas que não afetam apenas o hoje, mas também o amanhã.O objetivo resume-se na questão de investigação:Partindo de conceções criativas cinematográficas que visionam o futuro, que temas e problemas de base afetam a arquitetura? De que forma a arquitetura deve ser repensada considerando esses problemas?
