Bonded joints can be used in several structural applications such as the automobile, railroad and aeronautics industry. They can provide the capacity to obtain lighter structures, to reduce the production costs, to bond different materials and to distribute better the tensions than the most conventional methods. Because there are many industries that continue to use conventional methods and need to use more lightweight materials, it is important to study the bonded joints in order to get better results and thus be able to use in more industries. For that, in this dissertation it was studied a new type of geometry, the stepped scarf mixed joint, and was studied the behavior to the tensile strength and fatigue strength. For this joint two parameters were studied: the angle and the height of the step. Four different geometries were made with angles of 15º and 30º, and with a height of 0,50 mm and 0,75 mm of the step. The adhesive utilized was an epoxy resin Araldite® 420 A/B and the material used on the adherent was an aluminium alloy 5083-H111.The four geometries were submitted to tensile tests. In the fatigue tests only the joints with a step height of 0,75 mm and angles of 15º and 30º were tested. The crack propagation was analysed through an equipment of optic extensometry that utilizes the technic of the digital image correlation (DIC) and it was concluded that the crack initiated at the end of the joint and evolved to the center. The fracture surface and the adhesive thickness was also analyzed. As to the fracture surface, it was concluded that there is no relation between the percentage of the adhesive fracture and the thickness of the adhesive, nor between the percentage of the adhesive fracture and the number of cycles in the fatigue tests. For the thickness it was observed a relation with the number of cycles for the same tension applied. The lower thicknesses obtained the better the result. In the study of the tensile strength, it was concluded that the stepped scarf mixed joint presents better results than the scarf joint. For the same angle it has 29,39% more tensile strength. When compared to the three step lap joints, the results were lower by 54,7%. In the fatigue tests, the joint studied obtained better results that the ones that are on the literature.
