Revolutions across time have played a tremendous role in the evolution of modern architecture, clearly visible in the impact that the social crisis following the First World War had on the organization of spaces and dwellings. The historical conflicts and the transformations in society that resulted from this were the levers for the birth of new concepts applied until today.Social transformations were unequivocally reflected in the organization of space, lifting innovative visions that intended to respond to the needs and shortages worsened by historical events.Social housing policies established during the post-war period and governmental administrations’ reaction were worthy of meticulous analysis. The reorganization of the societies most affected by the conflicts resulted in practical planning aiming at lower classes, mostly factory workers, giving priority to their housing rights.Simultaneously, along with the development of new industrialization models, both architecture and construction started to apply principles of efficiency and wise use of space and resources. Production philosophies, such as Taylorism, were implemented in house planning, with the kitchen being one of the most enlightening examples of this event. The integration of women in the professional universe and the need to rethink family paradigms, brought a profound transformation over the female figure, which perception suffered several changes along with the social outbreak and the growth of socialist ideologies, the driving forces behind the feminist currents that were emerging throughout Europe. This research seeks to address the nuances between two distinct models - collective and individual kitchen -, two different perspectives that, while not paradoxical or conflicting approaches, sought the same end: to contribute to women's emancipation and to relieve their domestic burden.
