Família, poder e devoção: o caso dos de Ribadouro nos séculos XI a XIII

Abstract

O trabalho que aqui se apresenta pretende ser um pequeno contributo ao estudo da nobreza medieval portuguesa, tema que se encontra hoje bem explorado e fundamentado graças a nomes como, Alexandre Herculano, António de Oliveira Marques, José Mattoso e Armando de Almeida Fernandes. A presente investigação tem por objectivo estabelecer uma trajectória da linhagem medieval dos senhores de Ribadouro, no intermeio que medeia os séculos XI a XIII, desde a sua emergência e ascensão social ao escurecimento da linhagem, explorando as suas relações com o poder régio, as alianças matrimoniais estabelecidas com as famílias suas congéneres, o seu efectivo poderio público e o poder religioso e simbólico detido e que se encontrava assente numa vasta rede de santuários. Aqui, procuramos centrar a nossa investigação na figura de Egas Moniz «o Aio», senhor da casa de Ribadouro, e na sua descendência. Analisaremos a áurea mística que rodeia os feitos daquele nobre, e a relação próxima que mantém com o poder régio que lhe permite o alargamento das suas possessões, nomeadamente através do exercício dos mais altos cargos curiais e da governança de terras. Serão ainda analisados os ramos que daquele senhor descendem, legítimos e ilegítimos, e de que forma as alianças matrimoniais se tornam num poderoso recurso para evitar o esboroamento de fortunas. Por fim, um olhar sobre as ligações destes nobres ao mundo religioso, onde a fundação ou a protecção de novas comunidades monásticas rápido se tornou num dos pilares essenciais da sua afirmação política bem como um importante elemento para o reforço da sua implantação local e regional.

The work presented here is intended to be a small contribution to the study of medieval Portuguese nobility, a theme that is well explored and grounded today thanks to names such as Alexandre Herculano, António de Oliveira Marques or José Mattoso. The presente investigation aims to establish a trajectory of the lineage of Ribadouro, between the 11th and 13th centuries, from its emergence and social ascension to the darkening os the lineage, exploring its relations with the royal power, the common matrimonial aliances with their families, their effective public power and the religious and symbolic power held and based on a vast network of sanctuaries. The presente investigation aims to establish a trajectory of the medieval lineage of the lords of Ribadouro, between the 11th and 13th centuries, from its emergence and social ascension to the darkening of the lineage, exploring its relations with the royal power, the aliances common matrimonial relationships with their similar families, their effective public power and the religious and symbolic power held and which was based on a vast network of sanctuaries. Here, we try to focus our investigation on the figure of Egas Moniz «o Aio», lord of the house in Ribadouro, and his descendants. We will analyze the mystical aura that surrounds the deeds of that nobleman, in relation to the next one that he maintains with the royal power that allows him to extend his possessions, namely through the exercise of the highest curial positions and lan governance. The branches that of that descendant, legitimate and illegitimate, will also be pending, and in what way matrimonial aliances become a powerful resource to prevent the colapse of fortunes. Finally, a look at the connections of these nobles to the religious world, where the Foundation or protection of new monastic communities quickly became one of the essential pillars of their political affirmation as well as na importante elemento in strengthening their local and regional implantation.
