With the increase of aging population, there’s an increase of buildings whose main objective is to receive the elderly and provide them with the support they need, when their physical and mental abilities begin to show the difficulties inherent to their age or illness. The objective is to analyze fire safety conditions of nursing homes in Portugal taking into account the current regulation in force, with the main objective of identifying the possible flaws that exist in this type of buildings, which may contribute to the endangerment of the elderly, in a fire situation. This study is based on a basic research and aims to approach the problem from an exploratory-descriptive and explanatory point of view. As for technical procedures it is configured as a case study, preceded by bibliographic, regulatory research and data collection through surveys and observation, focusing on the analysis of the safety of nursing homes in Portugal. The results obtained mainly denounce problems in the design and/or execution of buildings, as well as in the choice and installation of safety equipment. In conclusion, fire safety regulations in buildings are not being properly implemented, revealing several difficulties, among which the analysis and interpretation stand out.It is necessary to continue development of the research in fire safety regulation implemented in building which is needed to demonstrate whether a restructuring of the building could reduce the flaws that are verified in the present.
