Resumo: O fim do Império Romano do Ocidente veio alterar profundamente o cenário geopolítico europeu. VIII e IX.
The demise of the Western Roman Empire led to a profound change in the European geopolitical scene. In this context, many were the peoples that fixated themselves on the former roman territories, thus establishing the bridge between Roman, Germanic and Christian cultures. In this environment, the Franks acquired the most preponderant role, bestowing upon Gaul the status of Western Medieval Europe’s central core. In a deep belligerent society, it is impossible to truly know its ways of operating without taking into account its warfare traditions. Thus, in a first moment, it becomes essential understanding what the Franks inherited from Rome, as well as what changed. Once we establish these system foundations, we will have, as well, created the necessary conditions for better understanding the successful kingship of Charlemagne. Between 768 and 814, Charlemagne built an impressive military career, which allowed him to begin a notable expansionist enterprise. In the year of his death (814), the Carolingian empire had twice the area and territories that had been left to Charlemagne, at the moment of his accession, 46 years before. Contrasting with a more general thought, such success was not granted through tactical or technological breakthrough innovations. In fact, it was owned mostly to a systematic enforcement of an administrative reorganisation, also based upon mechanisms of control that reflected the effort of centralizing the power, unheard of at the time: the Capitularies became the general body of laws; the missi dominici wandered through out the Frankish Kingdom, enforcing their contents. On the other hand, the Carolingians were aware of the importance of campaign planning, importance that it was heightened in a reality where, with the exception of the scarae, there were no permanent armies. In this fashion, they devised mechanisms that enabled a better understanding of both the internal and external realities, thus allowing the removal of the element of surprise on the western European theatres of war, throughout the transition between the 8th to the 9th century.
