This article examines the definitions of cancro and câncer given by Portuguese dictionaries from the 16th century to the present day, analysing the extent to which these definitions reflect dominant understandings of the concepts in medical compendiums over the centuries. It explores the historical evolution of the terms (and others that are closely linked to them) in lexicographic sources in European and Brazilian Portuguese, as well as in other lexical/textual databases. In earlier periods, the conceptual and referential context of both terms oscillates between astronomy/astrology and medicine. This study identifies the point in time at which the terms became largely fixed in a particular field: cancro (European Portuguese) in medicine, câncer (European Portuguese) in astronomy/astrology, and the reverse in Brazilian Portuguese, where câncer is predominant in medicine.
