Uso de parasitas helmintas na terapêutica de doenças inflamatórias

Abstract

As doenças inflamatórias autoimunes e alérgicas são uma preocupação em crescente no mundo moderno. É de notar a relação inversa entre o aparecimento destas doenças e a extinção do contacto com os parasitas helmintas devido às alterações de estilo de vida e melhorias na higiene e acesso a cuidados de saúde primários, como evidencia a Teoria da Higiene. Os parasitas helmintas, devido ao seu potencial para modular o sistema imune dos hospedeiros têm vindo a ser muito estudados na tentativa de usá-los como terapêutica das doenças imunitárias emergentes e de compreender os mecanismos inerentes a essa ação de forma a conseguir sintetizar novos agentes terapêuticos mais eficazes e seguros.

Autoimmune and allergic inflammatory diseases are a growing worry in the modern world. We should notice the inverse relationship between the appearing of these diseases and the extinction of the contact with helminthic parasites, due to the changes in lifestyle and hygiene improvements and access to primary health care, like proposed in the Hygiene Hypothesis. Helminthic parasites due to their potential to modulate host’s immune system have been immensely studied in the attempt of using them as therapy to these emerging immune diseases and understand the mechanisms inherent to them so that we can synthetize new more efficient and safer therapeutic agents.
