The olive oil industry has experienced a tremendous growth in the past decades with high population demand for its products and derivatives. Like any large-scale production, there is an increase almost proportional to the amount of solid waste and secondary effluents, due to its activity. Therefore, this type of industrial effluent poses a major threat to the environment, due to the character of danger to ecosystems. Then it becomes eminent, the study of alternative processes about treatment applications, in order to achieve the legal standard limits for its discharge in natural aquatic environments. In this dissertation, the main goal is to explore new alternative investigations for Fenton-type oxidation processes, with the objective of reducing operating costs and monitoring the effects of treated water on the environment. First, the experimental tests consisted in the heterogeneous Fenton reaction, using as a catalyst and a source of Fe (III), the Red Mud, applied to a simulated effluent (mixture of 5 phenolic acids). In order to study the Hydrogen Peroxide behavior in the reaction, as avoiding the scavenging effect, it was impacted by the periodic injection of this reagent to compare its total introduction at the beginning of the reaction. For [H2O2] = 100 mg / L, [Red Mud] = 1 g / L, pH = 3 and room temperature, it was possible to achieve about 100% removal of pollutants and less residual H2O2, by introduzing the total amount of H2O2 at the beginning of the reaction. Regarding the individual degradation of 5 phenolic acids, there were higher levels of degradation for Trans-cinnamic acid (about 99%), while the most difficult to remove was 4-hydroxybenzoic (75%). Finally optimized the operational conditions, the next step consists the study of the reaction behavior using volcanic rock from the Azores island and volcanic rock from the Canaries as a solid catalyst. Regarding the residual amount of H2O2, volcanic rock from the Azores ends up with the lowest amount, compared to the Red Mud. In contrast, as removals of phenolic content reached by the Red Mud continue to be higher, compared to volcanic rocks from the Azores and the Canaries, with 72% and 74.6% respectively. In view of these results, it is important to highlight that these differences must be due to physical and chemical characteristics of the catalysts. Despite of the reduction of organic load (COD), it reaches values close to 26%, telling that the effluent is not within the legal limits, and it is not able to be discharged to natural water resources.
