Sliding wear of various tungsten carbides is not widely scrutinized, or a mathematical model isn´t known to quantify the wear volume as a function of severity. In addition to the above, the behavior of the friction coefficient is also unknown, or how it evolves, once again, according to severity. In short, the scientific and industrial community is not aware of the influence of the variation of the binding phase on the tribological behavior of WC-based hard metals. This study will focus on non-lubricated sliding wear. The objective of this dissertation is to understand the effect of the variation of the constitution of the binder phase on the tribological properties of WC cemented carbides, as well as to establish a relationship between these and the mechanical properties of WC composites, such as fracture toughness and the hardness. In order to study the influence of the composition of the binding phase, tribological tests were carried out with the aid of a tribometer. This equipment, in addition to performing the intended wear tests, provides key experimental data for understanding the evolution of friction in each test, as well as allowing the calculation of the corresponding average friction coefficient. To create a mathematical model that characterizes wear according to severity, it is necessary to determinate the volume of the wear tracks. The determination of this volume of worn material was carried out with the aid of the Mitutoyo SJ-500 profilometer, followed subsequently by treatment of the generated data, using numerical integration. Then, the specific wear rate was determined, both for the wear tracks and for the counterbody. Finally, the wear surfaces were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy.Through the analysis of the results obtained, and excluding a certain initial running-in effect, it appears that the friction coefficient is independent of the sliding distance, but it depends on the normal load applied to the contact. This does not present any correlation with the volume of material, but the severity plays a predominant role, since, through the results obtained it is possible to conclude that the greater the severity, the greater the depth of the wear tracks. Consequently, this increase in the depth of the wear tracks leads to a greater volume of worn material in the samples.eng
