The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that a book, through its graphic and typographic materiality, guides us through its reading. Using the material form in which it presents the words inscribed in it, the book activates graphic and reading conventions, as well as creates these conventions, in an feedback loop with the reader. With this goal in mind, a corpus constituted by three editions of a same text — Bartleby, by Herman Melville — was chosen. The differences between these editions motivate and structure the three parts of the thesis. In the first part, named «book one», the point is to examine the workings of these instructions for reading, as present in the material, graphic and typographic elements of German publisher Reclam’s edition, within its Universal- Bibliothek collection. This is an edition meant for academic study, which enables an extensive analysis of various kinds of paratextual elements. «book two» looks at the Brazilian publisher Cosac Naify’s edition, in its Coleção Particular, in which the graphic design is especially cared for. Here, we will question the media involved in reading a book, by seeing how the visual and verbal media interact while both participate in the reading process. In «book three», we will observe how the instructions for reading are changed when the media format is altered. Some of the elements comprised in the first analysis are substantially altered — and those changes do not only respond to technological differences but also to a re-definition of reading protocols and conventions.
