On daily basis many of the mechanical components are submitted cyclic loads that promote their fatigue failure, being necessary to promote studies that help to predict their behavior with some precision over time. Usually the study of fatigue crack growth (FCG) is done through da/dN-ΔK curves. However, FCG is a non-linear and irreversible phenomenon, where occurs plastic deformation at the crack tip, while ΔK is a linear elastic parameter leading to some limitations. Other nonlinear parameters try to correct those limitations and quantify the plastic deformation, such as the CTOD, Crack Tip Opening Displacement. This parameter allows to quantify the plastic deformation, δp, as the elastic deformation, δe, at the end of crack tip.In this thesis, an FCG numerical study, in cracked specimens, with constant initial crack size, was carried out based on the plastic CTOD range, δp, using the finite element code DD3IMP. The main mechanisms identification was made considering notched and unnotched specimens, and specimens with and without contact at the crack flanks, to evaluate the importance of crack closure phenomenon on FCG. Different parameters were studied, such as, the notch radius (1, 2, 4 and 8 mm), crack length, state of stress and material (aluminum alloys 6082-T6 and 7050-T6). For the AA7050-T6, was also studied the material behavior, through models with pure kinematic and isotropic behaviors. It was found for unnotched-cracked specimens a linear increase of δp with crack propagation. The insertion of contact produced a more pronounced effect on δp under plane stress conditions. The notches increased the plastic deformation level at the crack tip, being the notch effect greater for minor notch radius. The introduction of contact in notched specimens attenuates the effect of notch radius and reduces the notch affected zone. Finally, a study was also carried out, for the previously studied cases, regarding the validity of the Small Scale Yielding (SSY) regime. It was found that the SSY assumption, which is assumed in most of FCG studies, it is not always valid. The increasing of crack length and the reduction of the yield stress of the material promotes the non-applicability of the SSY regime. However, the insertion of a notch, mainly for higher values of r promotes de SSY regime, validating ΔK.
