The present Master's Dissertation aims at the analysis and comparison of the thermomechanical properties and chemical resistance of samples of Styrene - Ethylene/Butylene - Styrene (SEBS) and Ethylene - Propylene - Diene (EPDM) rubber to be used as sealants. This work was carried out under the scope of the study plan of the Integrated Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering, branch of Biosystems and in Curricular Internship format at the company Tucab – Extrusão de Tubos e Perfis Lda. The increased use of thermoplastics can have a significant positive impact on sustainability policies and circular economy, due to the recyclability of such materials. The thermoplastics elastomers (TPE) are recovered and their waste can be re-used in different productions. The SEBS samples used for this study are based on the commercial polymer Kraton G1650, and where processed by extrusion at an industrial scale. The samples of EPDM were prepared by hot-pressing, in a laboratory press. Different tests were performed to assess the properties, namely: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Elemental Analysis, Compression Tests before, and after immersion in different chemical agents and weathering attacks (up to 20% strain), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA). At the chemical level, approximate compositions of the materials were obtained through the FTIR analysis software combined with a Tucab database of the materials. The elementary analysis shows that the Crystal SEBS does not have any content in inorganic elements and that, on the other hand, the Black SEBS is the one with the largest amount. It was verified, through compression tests, that EPDM has a Young’s modulus of 8122.8 ± 596.5 kPa. Black SEBS has shown the smallest Young’s modulus of the SEBS materials, with a value of 8549.8 ± 230.7 kPa. The DSC analysis allowed the determination of the melting temperatures of the SEBS ranges, as well as the glass transition of EPDM. From TGA, it is concluded that the SEBS degrades in two steps, the first that varies between 158 ºC and 185 ºC, and the second begins at 400 ºC. In the first step, it is considered that there is the degradation of some oils used in the formulation of Kraton G1650 as well as some of the Polypropylene presents in the formulation. The SEBS and other constituents degrade in the second step. The DMTA allowed to define the glass transition zones of the materials, and the Grey and Natural SEBS demonstrated to have two glass transition temperatures, one of the elastomeric phase of the SEBS (≈ -80 ºC) and another of Polypropylene (≈ -20 ºC), demonstrating some immiscibility of some constituents. The remaining SEBS demonstrates only the glass transition of the mentioned copolymer. Tests of attack of chemical agents and weathering showed that n-Hexane and Hydrochloric Acid there promoted an increase in the elastic modulus of the materials, except for SEBS Black, which remained identical. The weathering tests showed that none of the materials was affected during the test period (21 and 42 days). It is concluded that SEBS Black, for an application of sealants at normal ambient temperature is suitable, because its thermal stability is identical to EPDM, and resistance to chemical aggression agents is superior to that of vulcanized rubber. The modulus of elasticity obtained is also similar, despite the different compositions. Thus, this study showed the possibility of replacing thermosetting polymers with thermoplastic polymers, promoting recycling, and constant renewal of TPE.
