Throughout the last decades, the rehabilitation of buildings has grown so far as to becoming one of the paramount branches of construction, presenting itself as a real challenge to civil engineering. Population growth, alongside with the ever-improving accessibility conditions and the greater white-collar job offer in cities, has led scores of people into the large urban centers. In these, space is a valuable and limited resource, as room for new buildings gets more and more scarce. Thus, rehabilitating existent buildings has become an inevitability, which vouches for the importance of choosing proper analysis and inspection techniques: in order to properly intervene on and upgrade a preexistent building, one firstly has to study it thoroughly. Therefore, infrared thermography stands out as a suitable technique of great usefulness for both identifying constructive elements and for diagnosing building pathologies, such as thermal bridges. Regarding the increasingly demanding European energy efficiency directives, the capability to properly assess and act on thermal bridges is crucial. This thesis is meant to explore the capabilities of infrared thermography by identifying and analyzing a thermal bridge area surrounding a shutter box, in a residential building from the ‘60s located in the city of Viseu, Portugal. Moreover, temperature and relative humidity sensors were also used as complementary auxiliary devices, making it possible to collect all necessary additional data for the further quantitative analysis. The results obtained and the subsequent undertaken analytic approach made it possible indeed to attest infrared thermography as a valuable non-invasive façade inspection technique, in particular for identifying thermal bridges otherwise impossible to perceive by the naked eye.
