Establishing a critical look at the architecture of the contemporary world, it is possible to verify that the measures implemented today towards a more sustainable project practice are based, par excellence, on the use of eminently technological mechanisms. By looking more closely at the guidelines established for the upcoming years towards a greener architecture, we realize that this constitutes a constraint to achieving a more efficient energy performance in living spaces, making it necessary to explore more adequate passive constructive methods. It is in this context that this dissertation takes as its main objective the analysis of the meteorossensitive behavior of the conifer cones as a natural responsive system, investigating how the wood’s inherent capacity to react to the differences of humidity can serve as the basis for the creation of a responsive façade that doesn’t require any energy input. In this way, it was verified, through physical and parametric studies, how the reactivity of this material, derived from the absorption and segregation of water at the cellular level, has the potential to be applied in the envelope of the building, reformulating wood’s role as a construction material. As it does not require any energy resources to reproduce movement in the façade, and consequently regulate the climatic conditions of the interior spaces, this mechanism has, effectively, the capcaity to reduce significantly the energetic expenses of the building, presenting itself as a new opportunity within the paradigm of sustainable architecture. Therefore, the use of a responsive biological material intends to promote a new perspective of experiencing the spaces, collectively and individually, giving emphasis not only a new constructive method but on the positive implications that this may have in the social, economic and ecological conditions of the building.eng
