In the context of the quality of interior environment, the adequate acoustic comfort in buildings is essential. In Portugal, the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil – LNEC – (National Civil Engineering Laboratory) proposed, in 2013, an acoustic classification method for residential buildings. The proposed methodology is based on the assessment of three physical levels: vicinity, building and dwelling. Regarding the physical level of the dwelling – the most significant level –, and in accordance with the Regulamento dos Requisitos Acústicos dos Edifícios – RRAE – (Regulation on Building Acoustic Requirements), eight different elements are evaluated, and a score is assigned to each one. These assessment elements are weighted by its specific coefficients, which objective is to stablish different values according to the influence of each element in the final score of the physical dwelling level. Based on the LNEC methodology, this dissertation will analyse the feasibility to obtaining acoustic classifications Type A (very good acoustic quality), Type B (recommended acoustic quality) and Type C (minimum level of acoustic comfort) in dwellings of buildings of traditional heavy structure and mixed structure (facade and floor with heavy structure and internal partition walls in light steel structure). To illustrate the work developed, a case study will be presented regarding a multifamily housing building. The evaluation of the acoustic performance will be carried out by predicting the sound insulation of the studied construction based on previously verified test results and using methods based on Sharp’s Law and acoustic behaviour modelling tool, the ACOUBAT Sound.
