Abstract

Translation of The Novel of Don Sandalio, the chess player, by Miguel de Unamuno. Antoine Berman's "negative analytics" and translation ethics - a compromise solutionThe present work is a proposal of a translation from Spanish to Portuguese of The novel of Don Sandalio, the chess player, by Miguel de Unamuno. From the vast literary work of Miguel de Unamuno, essayist, novelist, playwright, poet and Spanish philosopher, who was born in Bilbao in 1864 and died in Salamanca in 1936, several titles are translated into Portuguese, namely that which is considered his masterpiece, the novel Niebla. There was, however, no record of the existence of a Portuguese translation of The Novel of Don Sandalio, the chess player. To translate an author of the magnitude of Miguel de Unamuno is an extremely demanding challenge, thus forcing the translator, and a fortiori an inexperienced translator in what concerns literary translation, to a careful reflection to assist all stages of the work to be carried out. In order to face the challenge, the project represents, we have opted to structure it in four parts. A first chapter is fundamentally intended to frame the author and the text to be translated, by putting forward the geographical, historical, cultural and biographical context in which it was produced. In a second chapter it will be presented the theoretical frame of reference for the analysis of the original text, which will be starting from a functionalist perspective, namely the orientations presented by Christiane Nord in Análise textual em tradução: bases teóricas, métodos e aplicação didática (Nord, 2016). The third chapter will carry the presentation of the translation proposal and in the fourth chapter the options taken will be explained and justified, identifying translation strategies of translation used by reference to the terminology defined by Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet in Stylistique comparée du français et de l'anglais (Vinay & Darbelnet, 1977), seeking to have as reference standard in the compromise solution that translation always represents the "negative analytics" and the translation ethics from Antoine Berman perspective in La traduction et la lettre ou l'auberge du lointain. (Berman, 1999).

A “analítica negativa” e a ética da tradução de Antoine Berman – uma solução de compromisso.O presente trabalho tem por objeto uma proposta de tradução de espanhol para português da obra La Novela de Don Sandalio, jugador de ajedrez, de Miguel de Unamuno.1Da vasta obra literária de Miguel de Unamuno, ensaísta, romancista, dramaturgo, poeta e filósofo espanhol, nascido em 1864, em Bilbao e falecido em 1936, em Salamanca, encontram-se traduzidos para português diversos títulos, designadamente aquela que é considerada a sua obra-prima, o romance Niebla. Não se encontrou, no entanto, qualquer registo da existência de tradução para português de La Novela de Don Sandalio, jugador de ajedrez.Traduzir um autor da envergadura de Miguel de Unamuno é um desafio extremamente exigente, pelo que se impõe ao tradutor, e por maioria de razão a um tradutor inexperiente no que à tradução literária diz respeito, uma cuidada reflexão a acompanhar todas as etapas do trabalho a desenvolver.Para enfrentar o desafio que o presente projeto representa optou-se por estruturá-lo em quatro partes. Um primeiro capítulo destina-se fundamentalmente a enquadrar o autor e a obra a traduzir, dando-se a conhecer o contexto geográfico, histórico, cultural e biográfico em que a mesma foi produzida. Num segundo capítulo, será exposto o quadro teórico de referência para a análise do texto original, a qual será feita partindo de uma perspetiva funcionalista, designadamente das orientações expostas por Christiane Nord em Análise textual em tradução: bases teóricas, métodos e aplicação didática (Nord, 2016). Do terceiro capítulo constará a proposta de tradução apresentada e, num quarto capítulo, serão expostas e justificadas as opções tomadas, identificando-se as estratégias de tradução utilizadas através do recurso à terminologia definida por Jean-Paul Vinay e Jean Darbelnet na obra Stylistique comparée du français et de l’anglais (Vinay & Darbelnet, 1977), procurando ter como padrão de referência na solução de compromisso que a tradução sempre representa a “analítica negativa” e a ética da tradução na perspetiva de Antoine Berman em La traduction et la lettre ou l’auberge du lointain (Berman, 1999).
