"Quando ele morreu...": O Papel das Redes Relacionais na Viuvez Feminina

Abstract

Apesar do peso cada mais significativo da população idosa na estrutura demográfica, da preponderância da população em situação de viuvez e da evidente pertinência do seu estudo, a viuvez continua a estar deficitariamente representada na produção científica, sobretudo no contexto português. Fatores culturais e demográficos fazem da viuvez um fenómeno feminizado, com consequências específicas na vida das mulheres que perdem o cônjuge. Ainda que tardiamente, alguns estudos no seio da sociologia da família começam a reconhecer a morte do cônjuge como um fenómeno capaz de alterar a configuração familiar, desencadear a sucessão e (re)distribuição de papeis no seu seio, reconfigurar identidades e representações. Para uma análise da viuvez feminina têm-se em conta fatores que caracterizam o contexto social, económico e histórico. No entanto, esta investigação foca-se nos padrões relacionais das mulheres viúvas. Usando contributos da network analysis, propõe-se uma análise da morfologia das redes sociais das viúvas, como meio para compreender de que modo as pessoas que elas conhecem, consideram próximas, interagem e a quem recorrem em determinadas situações para serviços e apoios diversos influenciam as diferentes esferas da sua vida. Assumindo que a viuvez é influenciada pelas redes de relações sociais, interessa também perceber o que acontece após a viuvez às redes de relações sociais das viúvas. A pesquisa parte, assim, de duas questões: Que alterações sofrem as redes de relações sociais das mulheres com a experiência da viuvez? Que papel têm as suas redes de relações sociais na vivência da viuvez? Para responder a estas questões, opta-se por uma metodologia qualitativa. Assumindo-se o carácter exploratório do trabalho, foram realizadas entrevistas a quinze mulheres viúvas na Região Centro do país. As suas narrativas revelam como as vidas destas mulheres, nas suas múltiplas dimensões, são perpassadas por fortes desigualdades sociais e sexuais, por práticas e representações tradicionais e pelas obrigações familiares. Olhar as trajectórias de vida e o impacto da morte do cônjuge com particular enfoque nas redes relacionais permitiu evidenciar o potencial emancipatório que estas possuem.

Despite the increasingly significant weight of the elderly population in the demographic profile, the prevalence of the widowed population and the obvious relevance of their study, widowhood is still poorly represented in scientific production, especially in the Portuguese context. Cultural and demographic factors make widowhood a feminized phenomenon, with specific consequences in the lives of women who lose their spouse. Even if late, some studies within the family sociology begin to recognize the death of the spouse as a phenomenon capable of changing the family configuration, triggering the succession and (re)distribution of roles within it, reconfiguring identities and social representations. For an analysis of female widowhood, factors that characterize the social, economic and historical context are taken into account. However, this research focuses on the relational patterns of widowed women. Using contributions from the network analysis, we propose an analysis of the morphology of widows' social networks, as a means to understand how the people they know, consider close, interact and whom they turn to in specific situations for diverse services and supports influence the multiple Assuming that widowhood is influenced by social relations networks, it is also interesting to understand what happens after widowhood to widows' social relations networks. Two fundamental questions lead the research: What changes do women's social relations networks undergo with the experience of widowhood? What role do their social relations networks play in the experience of widowhood? A qualitative methodology is chosen to answer this questions. Assuming the exploratory character of this work, interviews were conducted with fifteen widows in the Central Region of Portugal. These women narratives reveal how the lives of these women, in their multiple dimensions, are permeated by strong social and sexual inequalities, by traditional practices and representations and by family obligations. Considering the life trajectories and the impact of the husband's death with a particular focus on the social relations allowed us to highlight social network’s emancipatory potential.
