In recent years, mobile devices have had a massive entry into the professional context, with laptops and smartphones being the most predominantly used. For globalization, this data can be considered positive, however, the poor cervical posture adopted during its prolonged use, called "Text Neck", can lead to the appearance of musculoskeletal symptoms and postural deviations. To decrease or avoid these effects, postural reeducation is required. The complexity of this task motivated the design of a prototype of orthosis to support the upper limbs, under the hypothesis of decreasing the muscle requirement and improving the postural alignment of the users. Volunteers (adults, non-pregnant women, smartphone users who did not have scoliosis) were invited to test the prototype at a Clinic of Medicine and Rehabilitation in the city of Coimbra. Vertical posture alignments of the head and trunk were evaluated using the computerized photogrammetry technique and the muscular requirements of the upper trapezius and brachial biceps, using the surface electromyography technique, of the volunteers with and without the prototype. The sample population (n= 20) was composed of 11 women and 9 men, aged 26 ±6 years, body weight 68,1 ±13,7 kg and height of 171 ±9 cm. The results of postural evaluations in orthostatic position indicated, on average, an approximation of the head and/ or trunk to the ideal vertical alignment when using the prototype. However, only the postural results of the head were statistically significant (without prototype M=36,6° ±11,6 °, with prototype M=13,20° ±9,7°, p<0,001). On the other hand, the results of the muscular evaluations in orthostatic position presented, in average, decrease of the muscular effort of the upper trapezius and the biceps brachii when using the prototype and both were statistically significant (p<0,05; p <0,01, respectively). It can be inferred that there were changes in the vertical alignment positions of the head and trunk, as well as changes in the muscular activity of the upper trapezius and biceps brachii. It is assumed that the use of the orthosis for upper limb support may provide postural benefits and/ or less muscle demand to professionals and smartphone users.eng
