dc.description.abstract | Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) has been defined as a self-reflexive process, consisting of cognitions about the thoughts and experiences of the individual and which is usually associated with negative emotions. It is characterized by being repetitive, intrusive and difficult to ignore. RNT has two typical forms of presentation: worry and rumination.Self-compassion is defined as the ability to accept one's own suffering without judgments and the willingness to help oneself. It has three essential components with two opposing poles: mindfulness, warmth/understanding, and common humanity (as opposed to over-identification, self-judgment and isolation). Mindfulness is a strategy of emotional regulation that allows one to create an impartial detachment of one's thoughts in a balanced way, facilitating the acceptance of a mental state from its onset, however painful it may be. The warmth/understanding component to the Self is the ability to kindly understand oneself in negative situations. Common humanity is to realize that one's own experiences are part of a broader set of human experiences. The main objective of this study is to understand the associations between the three variables: Self-Compassion, RNT and psychological distress (specifically anxiety and depression symptoms). Our hypothesis is that self-compassion has a moderating role in the relationship between NRT and psychological distress. We recruited a sample of 200 participants from the general population, over 18 years of age, who completed ( online) a set of self-response questionnaires validated for the Portuguese population: Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire1; Self-Compassion Scale2; Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scale3. The data were analyzed with SPSS software and the moderation analyzes were performed using PROCESS.Overall, all variables in the study were correlated in the expected direction. The results also show that for the relationship between RNT and depression, mindfulness and understanding/ warmth function as moderators, whereas with regard to anxiety, only mindfulness has been significant. These data may be relevant for clinical intervention. | eng |
