Abstract: O Convento de São Francisco, construído de novo no séc.
The Convent of San Francisco, built again in the 18th century, was the scene of many historical events. During a preventive archaeological intervention in the Convent and other areas, the skeletons of 601 individuals of several age-at-death and both sexes were exhumed from mass graves. It was possible to distinguish two phases of burial, with this work focusing on a sample from the second phase. As this is a collection that is under study, little information is still known. This work focuses in the study of osteoarthrosis in 65 adult men. For this, the method used by Assis (2007) was chosen. The objective is to study the absence / presence of lesions matching osteoarthrosis, their severity and relation to age at death. The work was done through the macroscopic observation of the articular surfaces. For statistical analysis the SPSS v23 IBM program was used. In the analyzed sample, all joints (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle) present signs of osteoarthrosis, but the most common severity is mild. The less affected joints are the elbow and ankle. Some joints have a more significant relationship with the age group: right humerus head, proximal end of the right and left radius, right femoral head, proximal end of the right and left tibias and left patella. The fact that this study only included a relatively small sample of S. Francisco collection, with a low representation of both young and old adults, limits the interpretation of the obtained results. Therefore, more studies should be done in order to investigate the collection in its entirety.
