Bones are one of the most resistant tissues in the human body. In certain contexts, they are among the few to resist the adverse taphonomic factors to which they aresubjected, such as the action of heat. In this way, they play a very important role inthe forensic sciences and in forensic anthropology in particular whose objective isthe identification of the victim, as well as to assist in determining the cause andcircumstance of death. Burned human remains still represent a huge challenge, essentially due to the transformations that have occurred throughout this process. The objective of this project is to evaluate how the burning duration, at a fixedtemperature of 700ºC, influences the chemical structure, color and deformation ofthe bones. This analysis is supported on chemical analyzes (FTIR-KBr) and 3Dvirtual models, performed before and after burning, in a sample of 24 humors fromthe “Coleção de Esqueletos Não Identificados” and another four from the “Coleçãode Esqueletos Identificados do Século XXI” of the University of Coimbra. All thecollected data were analyzed statistically in R, which allowed to conclude that thereare chemical differences before and after the burning and the duration of exposureto the heat plays a central role in the study of burnt remains. Regarding color, theresults point to the importance of temperature, but also for duration. Morphologically, the changes recorded are not significant, and for best results, further studies areneeded.Although the present study attempts to get as close to reality as possible, this isdifficult because the bones have undergone controlled heating and in a fire contextthe environment is completely unpredictableIt can then be concluded that the role of forensic anthropology is decisive in theresolution of cases involving burned bones.
