A Figueira da Foz da Belle Époque (1890-1914)

Abstract

Nesta comunicação faz-se uma breve apresentação da cidade da Figueira da Foz no período da Belle époque, expressão que, tendo nascido já no século XX, se aplica aos últimos anos que antecederam a I Grande Guerra. Desde a década de 1890 que a cidade se converteu numa concorrida estância balnear, muito frequentada por banhistas espanhóis, fruto sobretudo da melhoria das acessibilidades por via ferroviária. “Praia peninsular” é a designação que melhor a caracteriza neste período, investindo o poder municipal e empresas locais num conjunto de infraestruturas representativas de uma certa modernidade, a exemplo dos equipamentos recreativos que a cidade ganha nestes anos, alguns dos quais se tornarão emblemáticos e o rendez-vous da sociedade elegante, contribuindo para afirmar a cidade no espaço ibérico. Far-se-á também uma breve incursão pelos espetáculos e repertórios musicais mais comuns, ao tempo, bem como pelas imagens veiculadas pela publicidade, as quais transmitiam as ideias de distinção social, de sobriedade, de nobreza e de cosmopolitismo, adequados ao público da média e da alta burguesia que se pretendia cativar.

This paper offers a short presentation of the city of Figueira da Foz in the period of the Belle époque, an expression that originated in the 20th century and refers to the last decades before the outbreak of World War I. From the 1890s onwards, the city became a popular seaside resort sought after by a great number of Spanish bathers, mainly as a result of improved accessibility by train. “Iberian beach” is the expression that best describes the city during this period, with local authorities and companies investing in a number of infrastructures that represented a certain modernity, such as the recreational infrastructures built during these years. Some of these facilities will become iconic meeting places for the most refined individuals, helping the city assert itself in the Iberian Peninsula. This paper will also briefly analyse the most common musical performances and repertoires at that time, as well as the images conveyed by advertising, which spread the ideas of social distinction, sobriety, nobility, and cosmopolitanism that suited the target audiences of the middle and upper bourgeoisie.
