The present work proposes to deal with the issue of tourist animation in terms of the influence and connections with the companies that provide accommodations to tourists. In conceptual terms, the analysis scenario will be limited to urban tourism, with a special focus on cultural products and the eventual value of the World Heritage classification that some historical centers receive. Assuming that tourist animation is a crucial component in attracting and retaining tourists in a tourist destination, it is sought to understand the ways in which tourist accommodation contributes to or benefits from this component. It is tried to demonstrate this situation by carrying out a study of three Portuguese cities, all of them holding the UNESCO classification: Coimbra, Évora and Porto. The first part of the work is dedicated to theorizing, through a specific bibliography, on the problems of cities, heritage and tourism. Firstly, it is sought to make a theoretical course that starts from the formation of the historical centers until their new functionalization as territories where the leisure takes on special preponderance. Then, the tourism system is observed, highlighting the specific importance of accommodation and animation. Finally, the tourist markets are viewed from the point of view of consumers and their experience. This theory supports the second part of the work where through the case studies of the historical centers of Coimbra, Porto and Évora it tries to understand how the companies that provide services of accommodations to tourists – hotels and “alojamento local” - influence their guests in the experience they have in the city. In methodological terms, the option focused on a comprehensive study on tourism supply and demand. In terms of the offer, were made: interviews conducted with companies managers, a survey by questionnaire to the front-desk staff and a survey about the online communication, of these accommodation, about animation in the respective cities. On the demand side, a questionnaire survey was applied to the guests. The results corroborate the existing literature in terms of showing that the accommodations have a relevant impact on the options that the guests take when visiting the destination. The role of the front-desk staff as key figure in the process of providing information and influencing the tourist experience is highlighted. Despite the increasing use of new technologies that ensure greater autonomy of the tourist planning experience in cities, the figure of the front-desk staff is still a source of information and advice that is often followed. The advantages for the accommodation about the connections that are made with the tourist animation are real and relatively accepted. However, it is pointed out that this is a field of action still quite neglected by the managers, who thus waste a revenue potential. Finally, in terms of the value of the World Heritage classification, the evidence shows that it has some influence on the notoriety of the cities and the tourist decision process. However, awareness of the potential of this UNESCO brand still seems to be neglected by tourist accommodation.pt
