Obesity is a term that originates in the Latin obesitas which means excess fat and characterizes the fat individual with excessive volume in the abdominal part and other parts of the body. Obesity is, therefore, the accumulation of fat in the body.Overweight exposes the individual to various diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, increasing the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, as well as multiple psycho-affective disorders. The causes that contribute to excessive weight are many, being lifestyle (poor diet, extremely caloric food consumption, sedentary lifestyle, stress) the main one, however obesity can also be caused by various hormonal disorders. The general objective of this study is to analyze socioeconomic inequalities in the risk of obesity among adults in Portugal. For this purpose, data from the last National Health Survey (year 2014) are used. Specifically, this study intends to quantify the inequalities and identify the factors associated with the occurrence of obesity, with a particular focus on socioeconomic variables such as income and education.Understanding the existence of socioeconomic inequalities in the risk of obesity will have considerable policy implications, particularly if a gradient in obesity is attributed to societal inequalities in society. The study confirms the existence of income-related inequalities, (crude concentration index value with sample weights of -0.10949).In the case of education, we also found evidence of inequalities; however, when the standardization of obesity by sex and age is carried out, the results are inverted. The results of the logistic regression also confirm that the risk of obesity in individuals belonging to the 5th income quintile is 23% lower than the first quintile (a statistically significant effect). Regarding education, there is also a statistically significant effect, with the risk of obesity for individuals with secondary (superior) education being 20% (40%) lower than those with basic education.
