Over the last few years, due to the scarcity of areas suitable for construction, from a geotechnical point of view, it was necessary to build on soils with weak geotechnical properties. The aim of this dissertation was to study the influence on the mechanical properties of the soft soil of Baixo Mondego, of performing a chemical stabilization with Portland cement and nanoparticles, more precisely carbon nanotubes.Due to their unique properties, carbon nanotubes have been used in a large number of applications, such as in composite materials, in order to enhance their mechanical properties. However, the difficulty to apply directly nanotubes is related with their natural tendency to cluster, resulting in the loss of most part of the benefits associated to the individual nanotubes. To overcome this difficulty it is necessary to properly disperse the carbon nanotubes before using them in the soil, making use of the addition of surfactants and using ultrasonic energy. In this study, five surfactants (Pluronic F-127, SDBS, SDOCO, Polycarboxylate and Triton X-100) were tested and characterized and their concentration optimized. Five combinations of surfactants (SDBS with Pluronic F -127, SDBS with Polycarboxylate, SDBS with SDOCO, SDBS with Triton X-100 and SDOCO with Pluronic F-127) were also tested in order to efficiently disperse the multiple wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).Finally, dispersions of carbon nanotubes were added to the soft soil of Baixo Mondego and Portland cement, which were allowed to cure for 7 and 28 days. Simple compression tests (UCS) were carried out on samples subjected to the two curing times (7 and 28 days), in order to evaluate the mechanical behavior of the final composite material. The results of the simple compression tests allow us to conclude that the addition of surfactants without MWCNTs can improve the mechanical properties of the soil, and these properties can be further enhanced when MWCNTs are added. The resistance to simple compression can be enhanced up to 59,81%, depending on the curing time and the surfactant and / or surfactant mixture used.
