The following Internship Report shows my experience of 3 months of working at the Newspaper O Jogo, in Lisbon, the internship started on the 31st of August and concluded on the 31st of November of 2015. During this period of time, the theme of gender in newspaper publishing struck me, due to the near absence of women at the publishing office where I was working and, also, due to the fact this was an internship in the subject of sports, an area that is thought to have very little cultural attraction to the female gender. The first necessary point of my investigation was the necessity to understand why some perspectives concerning women have been understood as culturally acceptable, these roles that predominated throughout history and that were evidenced during the period of the totalitarian regime of the Estado Novo , and that even today are still generating repercussions. To that end it is critical, to understand portuguese society under Salazars' rule, where the men had all the power, and were called "Head of the family", and the women were subjected to the role of submissive wife and mother, taking care of the household and children, with little to no access to fundamental rights, such as voting or having certain jobs. The second necessar angle to look at was the entrance of women into journalism as a profession, a process that intensified with the modernization of the profession itself and with a larger education of the female population, that, little by little, arrived at the newspaper publishers. This was a rather limited arrival, since women were conditioned due to their gender and the role they were supposed to play, as well as the fact that men were unused to sharing their space with the other gender. When the fascist regime in Portugal was overthrown, a large majority of laws that diminished womens rights were abolished and overturned, defining them as equals in the eyes of the law. As such, I have elaborated a point dedicated to the democratic victories women achieved duing the 70s' , that reduced the disparities between the genders and fomented female autonomy, which up until that point they had been denied.Even though womens rights exist in the Constitution and Civil Code of Conduct, it is notable how much we still must achieve for there to be true equality between genders. For that purpose, the European Comission has initiated a process called Equality of Gender Mainstreaming Policy , that seeks to, through associating various european entities, obtain equal prospects for men and for women, within member-states.Next we come to the point of gender and the production of information, a point that describes the influence of mainstream social media outlets on female representation, through distorted images of reality and socially constructed preconceptions about women. In terms of sports, one of the main reasons for this type of speech about the female gender is that sports newspapers tend to foster many male journalists, who will subconsciously keep perpetuating these preconceptions about gender.Back to the point of women in journalism, it's necessary to understand in what way the feminization of newspaper publishing contributes towards a different type of journalism. Due to the fact that journalism has always been ruled acccording to a patriarchal ideology, it is interesting to understand in what way the vision of a woman works, especially considering that this vision may indeed clash with that of a man.We arrive at a topic that is even more sensitive to the entrance of women - sports journalism. If it was difficult for mainstream journalism to permit the entrance of women into newspaper publishing, this was even worse in terms of sports journalism. Actual sport was never conventionally female, for various reasons, so interest and knowledge about this subject was never going to be the same for both women and men. In consequence of this, in terms of credibility, women had less than men when the topic of hiring a sports journalist came about. It would be lax of me to finish an internship report without speaking abut my personal experience working at "O Jogo" newspaper, so I speak of the history of the newspaper itself, the personal difficulties and challenges, my projects and everything I had the possibility to learn whilst working with these sports professionals. During this experience I elaborated a case-study, where I analyze twenty-five editions of "O Jogo". In this analysis, the objective was to verify female representation in sports newspapers, in terms of how many articles were written about females, the images associated with these articles, the number of female journalists that were present , representation of women by section, amongst other topics. In conclusion, a qualitative analysis of the last page and the sunday magazine (Revista J), demonstrated the presence of a more objectified image of women, that resort to a specific discourse and to sexualized female figures.
