The main objective of the present study was to analyze the perception of the geographic space, spatial concepts and spatial refraction elements used by 8th graders (aged 14 to 16 years). The study was carried out at the school EB 2,3 Inês de Castro, belonging to the Coimbra Oeste School Grouping. The main objective was to understand how students make a representation of the geographical space. In addition, the intention is to explain the spatial concepts mentioned, on the concepts presented in the three-dimensional taxonomy of spatial thinking by Jo and Bednarz (2009) and the level of concepts used, not spatial, simple spatial and complex spatial. In addition, it mentions the steps and cognitive processes necessary for the transition from a simple spatial thought to a complex spatial thought. For the implementation of this study, the students received three exercises: drawing a cartographic sketch of the route from house to school; to draw up a mental map of Continental Portugal; the importance of applying these exercises in the curricular unit and the importance of applying these exercises in the curricular unit. of geography in primary education is shown, as it stimulates geographic spatial thinking and develops visual memory essential for teaching-learning geography. This work also revealed the importance of applying mental maps as an instrument to be used in the teaching-learning process in this curricular unit. Finally, this study revealed that maps stimulate students' spatial thinking, and developed a critical spatial reasoning.
