dc.description.abstract | Essential oils are complex combinations of volatile compounds with strong odors present in several plants . They are obtained by the extraction of plant material and used since the early days of human history . These metabolites play several functions aiming to protect the plant , and some of them can be related with their activity in the human organism . They present a broad spectrum of biological activities from which their antimicrobial activity stands out due to their outstanding potential to inhibit fungus and bacterias . The essential oils from the tea tree ( Melaleuca alternifólia ) , thyme ( Thymus vulgaris ) , oregano ( Origanum vulgare ) and cinnamon ( Cinnamomum verum ) represent examples of oils that present these activities . Before the emergence of synthetical medicine , essential oils were frequently used for several purposes . Nowadays , with the growing negative opinion of consumers on the use of synthetic preservatives in the food industry , together with the forthcoming of bacterial and fungal infections resistent to several antimicrobial agents , there has been an increased necessity of finding new and better alternatives. Several studies on essential oils have proved their benefits , drawing attention to this field . This monography aims to highlight the importance of essential oils as products with antimicrobial activity and its relevance in fighting and preventing infections , with the final purpose of improving the patients’ health and well-being . | eng |
