The purpose of this dissertation is to solve a problem that is associated with the project of continuous improvement pursued by project of the Research and Development (R&D) department of Ansell Portugal. The Ansell group is the world leader in personal protective equipment of the hands and arms, thus it is essential to survey the problems associated with the developed products, so that these can be continually improved. The problem that motivated this MSc project was identified in articles that incorporate the INTERCEPT ™ technology and glass fibers. The glass fibers confer cut resistance to the produced articles, however after the knitting process, it is observed that several fibers get broken. In addition, with continued use of the articles, the glass fibers break easily, which can cause rashes due to the high probability of perforating the skin of their users. Thus, the aim of the present project is to develop a coating for glass fibers, providing them greater elasticity and preventing the user direct exposure to them. In the impossibility of preventing them from breaking, the coating should at least prevent the fibers from being released from the interior thereof. At an early stage, various alternatives for coating the fibers have been tested, some of which include prior modification of their surface. To modify the surface of the fibers, corona plasma or reflux with hydrogen peroxide was used, after which the silanization was promoted. For the modified glass fibers, copolymers and acrylate monomers were tested as coatings. Unmodified glass fibers were also directly coated with polyurethane (PU), poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) and copolymers of acrylates. In order to characterize and evaluate the performance of the aforementioned alternatives, FTIR and mechanical tensile strength tests were used, and the PVB coating was the most promising. At a later stage, the focus was also on the procedural difficulty involved in implementing each of the coatings at the pilot scale, which also reinforced the PVB selection. After this decision, all parameters and reaction conditions that could affect the performance of this coating were optimized. Finally, a pilot scale coating unit was implemented by coating a sufficient amount of fiber to produce 20 articles (sleeves), similar to the selected article to be used as reference (HyFlex® 11-250). The coated fiber was then covered by other yarns to give the final product the desired properties. The resulting yarn was then knit combined with other typically used in the article chosen to replicate. SEM, cut resistance (TDM) and abrasion resistance tests were used to assess and compare the performance of the article obtained with the introduction of glass fibers coated with PVB.The work developed allowed to obtain an article in which no broken glass fibers were observed when compared with the original article. However, only after the continuous use of developed articles by end consumers, a definitive conclusion about the solving of this problem can be drawn. In quantitative terms it is known that, by using a mixture of 100 mg / mL PVB in ethanol to coat the glass fibers, the tensile strength thereof (when subjected to a knot) increases about 3 times compared to the original fiber, respecting all the limitations initially established (such as the addition of the yarn title being at most 15% when compared to the original yarn, free silicone composition, mechanical properties of the final article being not adversely affected).
