Abstract: When a violent death caused by bone trauma has ocurred, the presence of a forensic anthropologist is essential during the trauma analysis. In this analysis the forensic anthropologist tries to determine when and how a death ocurred, assisting the forensic pathologist in determining the cause of death. Thus, it is extremely important to study bone traumas, and therefore is relevant to have collections of identified skeletons with bone lesions, whose autopsy information and causes of death are available. The present study introduces a collection of 38 calvarias with bone trauma, housed at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF, I.P.), South Branch, in Lisbon. The cause of death is known for all individuals, but the autopsy report in only available for 24 calvarias. This work consists in the anthropological analysis of bone lesions and subsequent confrontation with an autoptic analysis performed at the time of the autopsy by the respective forensic pathologist about a century ago (1918-1956). In this way it is possible to verify the limitations of the exams and discuss possible diagnoses. To that end, a macroscopic analysis was performed on the bone trauma of each calvaria that followed the recommendations of standardized literature, trying to evaluate when the injuries were performed, the type of injury, the cause, manner and mechanism of death. The results revealed that even a century after the autopsy, it is possible to distinguish between gunshot and sharp trauma, while blunt force trauma have become more difficult to observe since BFT (blunt force trauma) seems to be more susceptible to taphonomy. Besides, the cause and manner of death were considered indeterminate in the majority of the cases during the anthropological analysis. This work showed that both analyses have flaws, and that together, they can overcome the challenges created by bone trauma.
